Should we become citizen travellers? And should destinations become citizen host communities?

Thomas Power Co-founder and CEO of Pura Aventura thinks this is a way forward.

I asked Thomas what's the one thing he's like to change given the climate and nature emergencies. Here is his reply:

"If there was one thing I would change when we go travelling, we should do much more about trying to really understand where we're going so we can appreciate it more and we can enjoy it more; we know what we're eating, why we're eating it, where we're eating it, we know who we're speaking to.

"And we know we're not going to places where we're not welcome, so it's just a much nicer experience. So we want to be better citizen travellers.

"At the same time, I love the idea of the host communities (where we're going) having sort of citizen assemblies, where they say: you know what, let's share this, but let's keep this religious festival over here or this place to ourselves, because that's previous to our identity and we don't want people trampling all over it.

"So citizen travellers, citizen host communities."

This post is part of a series of interviews I'm filming with people across the travel and tourism industry, where I ask them to answer in less than 60 seconds, "What's the one think you'd change in travel, given the climate and nature emergencies?".
