Can there be the required action on climate and nature emergencies without social justice?

Prue Stone, Director of Sustainability, Hotelplan UK, argues that until we address the crux of social issues, we're not going to be able to progress environmental issues at the pace at which we need.

I asked Prue what is the one thing she'd like to change given the climate and nature emergencies. This is what she replied:

"The one thing I would change is the prioritisation of the social justice that needs to happen, particularly here in the UK.

"I think, our every day experiences are that of what's happening in the NHS, what's happening with our energy bills, how safe and secure are our streets?

"Now these are the most important things that people are going to be thinking about. And until we can really address the root cause of all those, people aren't going to be able to take a step back and connect with what's happening to the biodiversity here, why are we the most nature deplete country in Europe. Because that is not what's important to them at the moment.

"So until we really focus on the crux of our issues, we're not going to be able to progress the environmental issues I think at the pace of which we need."

This post is part of a series of interviews I'm filming with people across the travel and tourism industry, where I ask them to answer in less than 60 seconds, "What's the one think you'd change in travel, given the climate and nature emergencies?"
