Should we all just slow down? What if the world didn't rely on a system that prioritised profit, growth and instant gratification, where the slower, more environmentally friendly option was always the more economic option?
Stephanie Boyle, Founder of Arwen Communications urges us all to slow down and see things differently.
I asked Stephanie what's the one thing she'd like to change given the climate and nature emergencies, this is her reply:
"The one thing I'd change in travel would be for all of us to slow down.
"Everything in today's world moves so fast, we're busy, time stretched, often impatient. If you're working, you have to fit travel into a fixed number of holiday days or annual leave.
"But what if everything slowed down?
"If we had time to travel in a way that actually encouraged slower journeys, more time spent where you're going and more stops along the way.
"If the world wasn't relying on a system that prioritised profit, growth, instant gratification. If the slower, more environmentally friendly option was always the more economic option.
"My hypothesis is that if we had more time, we might take the train rather than the plane; we might venture outside of the resort; we could see more of the place that we were visiting, meet more locals, and take a moment to see places through the eyes of the people who actually live there.
"Then the promise of travel, which is a way to promote peace. and prosperity, might actually have a chance of being fulfilled.
"Henry Miller said, 'One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things'.
"Let's slow down and see things differently."
🙏. Stephanie
This post is part of a series of interviews I'm filming with people across the travel and tourism industry, where I ask them to answer in less than 60 seconds, "What's the one thing you'd change in travel, given the climate and nature emergencies?"
