Should the travel industry and authorities "put people and planet over profit and popularity"? That's what travel writer and sustainability consultant Karen Edwards would like to see.
"I'd love for them to unapologetically implement the measures and policies that can help tackle the crises. Through active solutions, technology, that is not only good for the planet, but good for human beings, our children's wellbeing and our grandchildren's futures", she said.
I asked her what is the one thing she'd like to change given the climate and nature emergencies, here is her full answer:
"I would love for our governments, our councils, our authorities, our tourism boards, and our tour operators and businesses to come together and remind us all that we are extensions of the climate and nature around us.
"I'd love for them to unapologetically implement the measures and policies that can help tackle the crises. Through active solutions, technology, that is not only good for the planet, but good for human beings, our children's wellbeing and our grandchildren's futures.
"Solutions like subsidising train travel so that people can afford to travel overland rather than fly, or incentivise big resorts and hotels to swap to renewable energy.
"Perhaps even regulate tourism infrastructure in places, so that local people can afford to stay in their homes and protect the surrounding environment that they cherish.
"So, in short, I'd like to see action. I'd love them to say that they're going to put people and planet over profit and popularity, and do everything possible to tackle these crises."
🙏 Karen
This post is part of a series of interviews I'm filming with people across the travel and tourism industry, where I ask them to answer in less than 60 seconds, "What's the one thing you'd change in travel, given the climate and nature emergencies?"
