You might associate eco lodges with far-flung destinations like Costa Rica or Malaysia, but a lodge doesn't have to be in a jungle to be eco-friendly. From the wilds of the Scottish Highlands to the jagged peaks of Morocco's Atlas Mountains, there are plenty of fanastic eco-lodges you can reach without flying. Offering great access to some of the world's most beautiful scenic areas - or simply the chance to get up close with nature in your backyard - eco-lodges put green issues at the forefront without skimping on creature comforts.
A range of our eco-lodges made it on to the Guardian's Green Travel List, and you can spot some eco-lodges on greentraveller founder Richard Hammond's list of the Top green places to stay in the UK and Green weekend boltholes - plus you can check out some of the best listed below.

Centre for Alternative Technology
CAT is an internationally renowned visitor centre, research and residential centre, entirely powered solely by wind, solar and hydro technology. Covering all aspects of green living - from woodland management to renewal energy and environmental building - the centre runs courses on sustainable living, as well as educational programmes for schools and graduate training programmes. There are seven acres of interactive displays, and a shop and vegetarian restaurant on site. There are also two eco cabins on site – hot water is heated by the woodstove or solar panels, and wind and water turbines provide electricity.
Gwel an Mor
Beach side, self catering Cornish holidays in an amazing clutch of eco lodges and A-frame lodges set in woodland. There is a fabulous spa with indoor pool and treatments on site, a full service restaurant (which delivers take out to your lodge), tennis court and a wildlife sanctuary, badger and bird hide. Mini-golf and (soon) 18 holes of golf. Like a five star hotel, but without the five star price. Delightful staff and passionate conservationists in the wildlife centre.
