Off-grid places to stay
Any property which is autonomous, self-sustaining and does not depend on public utilities is described as being "off-grid". You would expect an accommodation described this way to use only renewable energy and not to draw any electricity down from the National electrical grid.
Most are supported with photovoltaic or solar panels, wind turbines, hydroelectric generators, heat exchange units or other renewable energy source, although some are more basic and rely on candles and torches and wood burners for heat.
Occasionally you will find a property which has never been on the grid either because it was built before it was customary or because it was designed to be totally independent of any external energy needs. Most yurts, tipis and tree houses are totally off-grid.

Latest reviewed accommodation
"You get a true sense that it was inspiring, exciting to create this space - to invent new things with second hand stuff and make it stylish and something for anyone to aspire to. They are not banging the eco-drum, instead they have left it handily nearby with the sticks all ready for you to have a little beat if you feel like it."
"Perfect for anyone who appreciates a peaceful location with plentiful walks on the doorstep and a taste of the Good Life "

Suffolk Yurt Holidays
This idyllic site is tucked away in a quiet corner of the Suffolk countryside, surrounded by wildflower meadows, quiet lanes and historic villages. There are five hand crafted yurts available, each sleeping up to four adults or two adults and two children, on two extra thick, double bed futons. Throw open the doors and you’ll find a warm and inviting interior with rugs, soft throws, cushions and a wood burning stove complete with a complimentary basket of wood on your arrival. Every aspect has been thought through to minimise the environmental aspect of the business, from using 100% renewable electricity and low water use showers, taps and loos to locally sourced firewood and eco friendly cleaning products. There’s also plenty to visit in the local area, from nature reserves and beaches to the shops and markets of Woodbridge and Walberswick.
Bivouac
The proud winner of the 2012 Friends of Nidderdale AONB Conservation Award, Bivouac is a charming, eco-friendly place to stay with woodland shacks (sleeping up to seven), yurts (sleeping up to five) and a camping barn. Everything’s been created with the environment in mind – a carbon neutral wood chip boiler and wood burners supply heat, there’s no electricity and water is recycled. Set in the Swinton Estate, the views over valley and moorland are outstanding – and there’s ya ‘Druid’s Temple’ stone circle in the grounds. There’s a great café that’s open all day and the bar’s open until 11.30pm at weekends.
