KE Adventure Travel wins industry eco award

Posted by Richard Hammond at 03:08 on Friday 19 January 2007

The Association of Independent Operators (AITO) has given this year's award for 'Achievement in Responsible Tourism' to KE Adventure Travel, which specialise in worldwide trekking and climbing including holidays for adventurous families and schools...

KE Adventure Travel works closely with the Juniper Trust, a registered charity dedicated to locating and carrying out sustainable aid projects. According to AITO, "KE Adventure Travel’s impressive portfolio of completed and ongoing projects ranges from health and educational initiatives in India and Nepal to the installation of solar panels in remote valleys in Peru and clean water projects in Morocco". KE Adventure Travel’s school groups often visit and participate in the projects as part of their educational experience of responsible tourism.

Highly commended for their work in Responsible Tourism were Dragoman, which AITO says "has again this year supported a wide range of programmes and projects, and raised substantial sums in innovative ways", and Wildlife Worldwide, "for its continued support and action in helping to protect and enhance wildlife interests".

AITO also assigns its members with a rating for their commitment to 'responsible tourism'. All AITO members are required to meet AITO’s basic standards and thus qualify for one star accreditation, though only 19 have been given three stars, which AITO says "indicates that a company has fully integrated Responsible Tourism into all aspects of its business and destination work".
