Richard Hammond suggests that you "Take one of the local, slower trains in rural France - from Toulouse south to Montrejeau and then by bus to the Pyrenean spa town of Bagnères-de-Luchon (a hub for French skiers in winter and mountain bikers in summer), or from Sarlat to Lalinde and Bergerac, criss-crossing the Dordogne and the villages that perch spectacularly on its high cliffs. You see the world a little differently."

Pilgrim Routes of Gascony Gascony - the quiet side of south-west France

Explore one of France's last remaining 'secrets', the Gascony region, filled with enchanting landscapes. On this rewarding yet gentle walk, you have all the ingredients for a wonderful, and very relaxing, holiday. Indeed, given the leisurely pace of the walking, the easy access from Toulouse and the warm hospitality of the hoteliers, this makes an ideal first walk. You'll follow the GR long-distance path through the rolling, open countryside of the Baïse Valley, where you'll pass through sleepy hamlets, vineyards, orchards, small woods and remote farms.

Discover a landscape of different hues of green and yellow - from the golden cornfields and vast fields of sunflowers whose heads bob gently in the warm breeze, to rolling pastureland punctuated with small copses. You'll also experience cultural treasures such as the delightful towns of Condom and Lectoure, the abbey at Flaran and the collegial church at La Romieu. You'll also come across the fortified 13th-century village of Larressingle, described by some as a miniature Carcassonne - it is guarded by a medieval castle and also has a beautiful Romanesque church.

Accommodation:

Logis des Cordeliers, Condom This simple hotel, complete with an outdoor pool, is well located to explore Condom. As your stay is on a bed and breakfast basis, you are free to take your pick of the town's various restaurants.

Hotel de Bastard, Lectoure Do not be put off by the unfortunate name: this is a smart hotel (complete with a pool) run very professionally by owners Monsieur and Madame Arnaud. We include breakfast only in our arrangements so that you are free to dine where you wish, though it is well worth sampling the hotel's own superb restaurant on at least one night (please tell us when you book if you wish to dine here so that we can reserve a table for you).

Chambres d'Hôtes Bénazit, Bénazit : with just four rooms, this delightfully spacious, high-quality inn is housed within an enormous converted barn of exposed beams and stone walls and boasts wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. You will be warmly welcomed by owner, Eric Thamers, who also cooks your dinner. The large garden includes a swimming pool, and there are bikes on site for guests to borrow, plus a baby grand piano and a telescope to keep you amused in the evenings.

OR

Le Bonheur de Miradoux, Miradoux: expect a warm welcome from Dutch owners Wilma and Karel Thissen when you arrive at their high-quality converted 18th-century town house in the centre of the charming village of Miradoux. It boasts just four delightful rooms and a lovely terrace on which to enjoy the views over the rolling hills as you take breakfast or the set-menu dinner along with other guests. There are pleasant gardens to relax in after your walk and bikes which you can borrow should you wish to go for ride round the local area.

What our customers say:

Mr Porter of Merseyside
We really loved this holiday, the region with its rolling hills of sunflowers and the walks themselves but we are also so glad we opted to spend 2 nights in Bordeaux itself as it is such a beautiful city. The person who wrote the walking notes needs a special mention as they were so accurate and really detailed! The best notes we have had.

Mrs West of Cheltenham
Hard to pick just one highlight: walking in spacious, peaceful landscape, being in Condom and Lectoure on market days, being able to relax because we knew Inntravel were taking care of things.

Ms Ridley of London
We loved the guesthouse at Benazit! What an exquisite place! Truly magical and very calm and peaceful. That pool was bliss both days after our walks. The quality of the accommodation and its fittings were superb. And the countryside. So very beautiful and tranquil, even on a hot day. Very reviving and peaceful (if that is not a contradiction!).
