The service includes a same-station platform change at Lille to a high-speed TGV Lyria train to Geneva. The two services are time-tabled to ensure a fast transfer between the two trains such that the overall journey time from Geneva will be 6 hours 18 minutes from London St Pancras or exactly 6 hours from Ebbsfleet (with a 37-minute connection in Lille).

The new route will offer passengers a convenient way to travel to some of the most popular destinations in Switzerland, with simple onward connections from Geneva to Aigle, Martigny, Sion, Sierre, Visp and Brig.

Photo: Richard Hammond/GreentravellerThe quicker route is also good news for travellers who prefer to take the train to ski areas that are close to Geneva, such as Chamonix. Although it is possible to reach Chamonix via a 1hr 40 minute connection at Martigny, the faster train from London to Geneva could encourage more people to take the train and then drive from Geneva to Chamonix. The luxury Chamonix-based chalet company Collineige will be providing a driver to pick up customers who arrive by train at Geneva station and take them to their chalet in Chamonix, a journey of little more than an hour. Also, if you book one of their catered chalets, they’ll pay for your parking at Ebbsfleet.

Available on a catered or self-catered basis, Colliniege's chalets range from romantic little Mazot Les Tines, once a farmer's storage space but now a snug self-catering little hideaway in Les Tines, to Chalet Valhalla, a large and luxurious catered geothermally-heated ski pad in the centre of Chamonix with views of Mont Blanc. Despite being both homely and stylish, their killer feature is the services of the company's owner, Colleen. Having lived in Chamonix for over 20 years her local knowledge is as broad as the huge baguettes baked each morning by the town's Boulangerie Saint Hubert; happily she's willing to share it.

The inaugural service will leave London St. Pancras on 14th December 2014. Return fares start from £116, so get in quick!

Nick Mercer, Commercial Director, Eurostar, said “Our research shows a real appetite for a more civilised way to reach popular European destinations, and this new connecting service offers easy access for customers looking for a city break in Geneva or to reach some of the most spectacular ski resorts in Europe. With city-centre to city-centre travel and a generous baggage allowance, the new offer proposes an attractive alternative to flying.”

The new route is the latest addition to Eurostar’s growing list of destinations, with a direct service to Lyon and Marseille starting in May next year, followed by Amsterdam in late 2016.

>> Winter rail tickets go on sale tomorrow - 16th October-  to book for travel from 14th December 2014. Routes throughout France will become available, as well as some international journeys including Paris to Milan, Geneva, Zurich, Luxembourg and Freiburg, and from Brussels to a range of French cities.
