Why we've chosen The Start, Hay-on-Wye, Powys, Wales:

Welcome to The Start, bed and breakfast accommodation in Hay-on-Wye. Steve completely renovated our 18th century home to give us three ensuite rooms all with splendid views. We have cycle lock-up and there's drying facilities should anyone get wet!! (This is Wales, after all)

All the rooms have the usual facilities, with wifi throughout. We use antique linen sheets and blankets and my mum makes the Welsh quilts for extra warmth and comfort, and you will find power showers and towel heaters in the ensuites. Breakfast is served in the dining room between 8&9 am and comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. We offer a cold buffet table with fresh and dried fruit salads, yoghurt, cereals and Steve's gorgeous apple juice. The main event is a full cooked Welsh breakfast, complete with laverbread and home-made jams and breads. Vegetarians or coeliacs are catered to with no problem at all. I make my own Glamorgan sausage and we have plenty of gluten-free products. Ooh did I mention the eggs from 'the Girls' in the garden? (none of our ingredients travel far!)

There is a separate residents lounge crammed with local information on great days out and guests are more than welcome to borrow the maps. Steve was born and bred in Hay so can give you any inside info you need about the fantastic surrounding countryside. We try and live in an environmentally sustainable way and we endeavour to provide a relaxed, tranquil and friendly atmosphere for all our guests, it's very important to us that you have a great time. Feel free to read our reviews on trip advisor and see what others have said. The bulk of our business now comes from guests returning, local word of mouth or recommendations to friends. Whatever your reason to stay, be it book buying, adventure making or simply taking time out to breathe, spoil yourself (you deserve it!!) give us a call.

Review by Lucy Symons

"Full of energy and utterly dynamic, Steve and Dawn are understated yet inspirational. In addition to making delicious jam, not only is Dawn a consummate hostess, she's interesting, too. You couldn't help but learn something new, chatting to her.  This is a place where, even on a day replete with Welsh sunshine you won’t be able to help but smile at the family of otters who play in the brook."
