Why we've chosen Southlands Farm

Southlands Farm's self-catering Northumberland cottages have open fires, en-suite bathrooms, bespoke kitchens and antique furniture - beautifully put together to make a cosy and restful retreat.

All three cottages are formed from a traditional Northumberland sandstone building, with a paved patio and original stone troughs overflowing with flowers. Each cottage accommodates 2 or 4 people and the cottages combined can accommodate groups of 6 to 10 people. Southlands Farm is a working smallholding, with a herd of Dexter cattle, pigs sheep and hens. Farm produce and vegetables are available most of the time.

There is plenty to do and see in Northumberland, there are stately homes, wonderful gardens, museums and historic towns just a few minutes’ drive away. Hadrian’s Wall – probably the most famous legacy of the Romans – is just down the road. Also within easy reach are the award winning Alnwick Gardens and Alnwick Castle, fortress home of the Duke of Northumberland, the Farne Islands and Holy Island, the North Pennines and the exquisite beaches of the Northumbrian coastline.

Guests can discover a new hobby or learn something new - try your hand at wrought iron work, flower arranging, fly fishing or clay pigeon shooting. Or if you don't want to venture out you can feel equally at home warming your feet by the cottage fire, or just a short walk away is a local cosy pub where meals are cooked by a top chef.

Reviewed by Paul Miles:
'A very comfortable, pet-friendly place run by a fun and friendly couple in a beautiful part of England. The only downside was the lack of views of rolling hills from the cottages themselves, but this is easily made up for by the warm hospitality, delicious food and cosy atmosphere.'

How does Southlands Farm Cottages minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?

Southlands Farm has implemented a number of green measures in their cottages to be awarded Gold from the GTBS. Such initiatives include installing solar water panels for heating, insulation to exceed building requirements, an energy-efficient boiler and ‘A’ rated appliances. The owners take further eco measures by composting, recycling, bottle collection, using bulk dispensers and trying to reduce the packaging that comes onto the farm.

To reduce water consumption, water saving devices have been installed for the showers and the toilet cisterns. Grey water is harvested and rainwater is collected for use in the garden. Locally sourced produce is as much as possible, and eggs, Dexter beef, Kune Kune sausages, bacon and gammon are produced on the farm and available to guests. Additionally, the farm grows a lot of fruit and vegetables, and guests are encouraged to help themselves. To minimise their impact on Northumberland's stunning natural environment and its biodiversity, guests are encouraged to arrive by public transport and can be collected by the owners from Hexham or Corbridge station, and there is a bus stop 60 yards down the road.
