Why we've chosen Feather Down Farm's Midgham Farm

Home to the Chiddock Pony Stud Farm, we’re proud to have introduced miniature ponies to our stable, delighting younger guests as much as do our trampoline, giant rope swing, and the adventures found in our woods. Here the bluebells come into bloom in early summer and the whole woodland, including shady Midgham Long Copse, home to our tents, is ablaze with purple-blue flowers. In this quiet spot you’ll likely see or hear roe deer, honey buzzards, cuckoos, woodpeckers, kingfishers and owls, as well as our traditional-breed pigs, who roam here year-round. This is den-building country too, and our son Oliver will show you the best spots – departing children often leave messages for those who add to their dens.

The River Avon is another source of activities, from fishing to paddling to picnicking sat at the furniture crafted by Henry from the woodland’s fallen oaks. Our Farm Larder is another highlight, and along with wines from Berry Brothers, you’ll find ingredients for cooking all three daily meals from scratch. The New Forest is home to many a cosy country pub and we’re always ready to make recommendations!

Greentraveller's Insight: The Featherdown Farm Canvas Frills Lodge or Log Cabin Frills
The log cabins and tents are big enough for up to six people – a maximum of five adults and one child up to 12 years old. Cooking & heating is provided by a cosy wood-burning stove (one crate of firewood is provided per day). There is an ample living area (45 square metres), which includes a flushing toilet, showers and spacious, comfortable beds. Each cabin and tent includes bed and kitchen linen, the kitchen has cold running water and there are verandahs for evening sun-downers.

Highlights at Midgham Farm:

  • Located in a bluebell wood
  • Den-building in the woods
  • Private fishing at River Avon
  • Close to the New Forest

Why is this a greener holiday?

To truly minimise the environmental impact, guests are encouraged to arrive by public transport: the nearest train stations are Sway or Beaulieu, and from either of these stations, you'll need to take a bus or a taxi to reach the farm, see: www.traintaxi.co.uk. Onsite the accommodation is very low impact, as the tents are effectively off-grid. There is no electricity and lighting is by candle. Heating and cooking is done on a wood-burning stove. The hot tubs are also wood burning. Much of the produce in the honesty shops is local sourced, either from the farm or other nearby suppliers. To avoid use of additional transport for the duration of their holiday, there is a wide range of low impact family activities on-site and in the surrounding area, including walking, hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities of roe deer, honey buzzards, cuckoos, woodpeckers, kingfishers and owls.
