Why we've chosen Hillside Farm (Country Retreat)

Hillside Farm is to be found a 5-minute jaunt from Rhossili Bay, voted the best UK beach and third best in Europe in 2014. Pygmy goats, 40 chickens and two dogs share with the Taylor family and their sheep 175 acres of farmland, all of which lies within the Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Views from the area are as stunning as you would expect of the first place in the UK to receive this designation.

The family has farmed around here since as far back as 1840. Lambing still takes place from March to May, and there are always lambs to help bottle-feed come the spring. You will also come across horses and cattle that are roaming free, as its all common land around there where farmers retain ancient rights to graze their animals. The tents are sited in an orchard close by the farmhouse. Views stretch back across the Gower Peninsular taking in scattered hamlets and rocky outcrops.

Greentraveller's Insight: The Featherdown Farm Tent
The tents are large enough to fit six people – a maximum of five adults and one child up to 12 years old. Cooking & heating is provided by a cosy wood-burning stove, plus you'll get one crate of firewood provided per day. There is an ample living area (45 square metres), which includes a flushing toilet and spacious, comfortable beds. Each tent includes bed and kitchen linen, the tent’s kitchen has cold running water and there are hot showers on site.

There is much for the visitor to enjoy at Hillside, from the activity at the kids play area to the well-stocked honesty shop, yummy Welsh cakes and the simple fact that nothing, as guests have noted, is too much trouble for the Taylors. Beyond the farm, surfers take to a beach that should be known to them all, mountain bikers go over Rhossili Down, while other adventurers locate the shipwreck of the “Helvetia” or sample the back-in-time Parkmill heritage centre for kids. Otherwise, simply glory in the landscape of and around Hillside Farm, including 15 miles of glorious coastline. Dogs can come and enjoy it too between July and September.
