Why we've chosen Guidfa House, Powys, Mid Wales

This beautiful Georgian house, set within picturesque gardens, sits in the village of Crossgates, just north of Llandrindod Wells.

The 6 individually furnished non-smoking bedrooms and suite are all bright and spacious and include a ground floor room for less active guests. All rooms have comfortable beds, flat screen TV with DVD, radio alarm clock, tea/coffee making facilities, plenty of fluffy towels, bath robes and quality toiletries.

Unwind in the elegant sitting room with its cosy open log fire and impressive original chandelier. Drinks and wine are available from the bar and there are plenty of books, leaflets and maps to help you plan your stay. Free Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout.

Breakfasts are made from the very best local produce complimented by homemade jams and marmalade. In the evenings, a selection of homemade soups, sandwiches or cold platters with freshly baked bread are available.

Set, as it is, in the very heart of Wales, Guidfa House is a fantastic base for touring the wonderful local countryside, which includes the Elan Valley, the Radnor and Hafron Forests, the Brecon Beacons and the Welsh Borderlands.

Walkers and birdwatchers alike will find plenty to interest them including the local RSPB red kite feeding station. Cycle hire or pony trekking can easily be arranged along with golf and fishing. Cycle storage and drying facilities are available on site.

Why is this a greener holiday?

To truly minimise the environmental impact, guests are encouraged to arrive by public transport: the nearest train station is Penybont and the accommodation is located less than half a mile from the station, only a five minute walk. Turn right out of the station, follow the road to the roundabout, and continue straight, then it’s the first property on the right.

Onsite the owners have taken a number of green measures to reduce the environmental impact of their tourism business, and have earned Silver from the GTBS. They have installed solar panels to generate electricity. The owners recycle and reuse where possible and compost all food waste. They also use local and homemade produce where possible. The garden has been planted to encourage wildlife and birds. The environmental impact is always considered when purchasing supplies and laundry.

"The owners told me that generally lovely people stay with them and so hosting them is easy - they have a policy to always be completely honest about what they do, ensuring guests leave pleasantly surprised and never disappointed - hmmm...  I am rather suspicious that they undersell themselves, but perhaps this ability to be so humble, pragmatic and philosophical has enabled them to weather many storms over the years."
