Why we've chosen The Chestnuts

Bundle yourself and your bike on the train to Shipton Under Wychwood and when you arrive, cycle the last 7 miles (or call for a taxi) to The Chestnuts, a house full of character with stone floors, beamed ceilings and an inglenook fireplace. Decorated in a neutral pallete of calming creams and whites, it is a haven of tranquility in a beautiful unspoilt Cotswold village. The house is luxuriously equipped with crisp white linen, goose down duvets, a fully equipped kitchen for the keenest chef, including an espresso machine and free wifi and telephone to many regions, for those who need to stay connected. It is rated four stars and achieved a Gold for its service and excellence and holds a Gold Green Tourism award. It truly is a place where luxury and sustainability meet.

The owners have taken a wide range of green measures to reduce their impact and in recognition of their efforts they have been awarded Gold from the GTBS. To reduce the draw on natural resources, all energy is generated from 100% renewable resources, low energy or LED light bulbs are used throughout. Additionally, the floors, ceilings and walls are fully insulated where possible, and doubled grazing has been applied. All appliances are of the highest energy rating and maintained for efficiency, including a condensing boiler and underfloor heating. An owl monitor in the kitchen enables guests to view in an effort to encourage modest consumption.

To reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, all materials are recycled where possible and food waste is composed and used in the garden. Cleaning products and toiletries are purchased in bulk and refillable dispensers are used. To reduce water consumption, water restrictors have been installed on taps and toilets are dual flush. The owners have taken up the lawn to have a gravelled garden.

To encourage car free days out, the owners have created a guide to ten things to do within five miles, and encourage guests to walk or cycle. The owners support many charities on behalf of the cottage and run the cottage business as a carbon neutral enterprise. They are regular contributors to magazines and newspapers discussing sustainability as a result of their substantial efforts to reduce their environmental impact..
