Why we've chosen Casa Las Chimeneas

This rambling guesthouse comprises nine imaginatively renovated rooms in traditional houses ranged around the central courtyard of Mairena, a delightful little whitewashed village of typically labyrinthine alleys high in eastern Las Alpujarras. Mairena is known as the ‘Balcony of Las Alpujarras’, and Las Chimeneas makes the most of the views down the slopes towards the Med; some rooms have south-facing balconies, while the restaurant (serving delicious three-course evening meals) has an enticing terrace. There’s an open wood fire in the welcoming living room for chilly evenings, and a cooling plunge pool for the hottest summer days.

More than just a place to stay, though, Las Chimeneas is an incubator of ideas – English owners David and Emma Illsley are brimming with suggestions for activities and places to visit in the area. Join cookery classes with resident chefs Sole and Conchi, venture out on a nature walk with an experienced guide, trace the many local footpaths or simply stroll down to the organic finca that yields olives, cherries, persimmons and many of the vegetables cooked up in the restaurant. There are dedicated yoga retreats, cookery courses and walking weeks with local celeb author Chris Stewart, too.
