Swallows skimming about, cattle lowing and the scent of home-made organic bread could greet you at our organic dairy farm in the Peak District National Park- as well as a chalk board with a welcome message just for you.

Whether you are staying in the little romantic retreat for two (Beechenhill Cottage), tucked out of sight, the big comfy cottage for 6 (The Cottage by the Pond with full wheelchair access), the chickens will accompany you to your door.

We, Sue and Terry Prince and our daughter and son in law Alex and Rob Gray love the place with a passion. So be prepared for lots of local food, interesting energy solutions, on-going projects, sympathetically restored buildings, enabling recycling systems and plenty of local knowledge and information. Stay here and you become a ‘local’ you get to discover where to get the best tasting treats, the best walks and photo opportunities.

Beechenhill is an organic farm in the Staffordshire bit of the Peak District National Park, an area recognised by the nation as an exceptionally valuable landscape. Our family has the opportunity to live in this beautiful place in a way that enhances the environment. We are not perfect but are on a journey towards improving what we do. It is very important to us all that we share our place with guests - after all what is the point of standing alone in a great place saying 'wow isn't this lovely!!' We are proud of our place and we delight in sharing it with our visitors.

The welcome at Beechenhill extends to all and many wheelchair users come back again and again to The Cottage by the Pond, a three bedroom (two bathrooms) cottage with full wheelchair access. It is a warm cottage with generous space. All its accommodation is ground floor and level except one bedroom nestled in the rafters. The large bathroom has a flat floor shower and accessible WC. We have an electric adjustable bed and chair and a hoist and shower chair are available by arrangement. The beds are zip-and-link so you can choose the best arrangement for you. The Cottage by the Pond is ideal for families, with swings and games in the nearby garden. Accompanied children can watch milking and collect eggs.

Little Beechenhill Cottage is warm and cosy, a tranquil hideaway for two with one bedroom (canopied king-size bed, old polished pine furniture and shutters), one bathroom and a mural ceiling. Tucked away in a walled garden, you can’t see another house from here.

Both of our self catering cottages have log burners, radios, ipod docks, DVD players and are heated by our wood fired biomass boiler. Also available are some real treats: wood fired Swedish Hot tub and heated cave, electric bikes (please book ahead), garden chess and a farm trail.

Why is this a greener holiday?

To truly minimise the environmental impact, guests are encouraged to arrive by public transport: the nearest train station is Derby and from there take the bus or taxi from Derby Train Station to Derby bus station, and the bus to Ashbourne where the owners are happy to collect guests by prior arrangement.

Onsite the owners have taken a number of green measures to reduce the environmental impact of their tourism business earning them Gold status from the GTBS. A wood boiler provides heating and hot water. The building is highly insulated, some of which is sheep’s wool. Local, organic and fair trade produce is used where possible.  Waste is sorted and where possible either composted or recycled.

"As with her paintings, Sue has the B&B business down to a fine art. For a relaxing weekend in a family-run, farmhouse setting, with access to glorious National Park scenery literally on the doorstep, Beechenhill is hard to beat. Not least because the welcome here is so heartfelt."
