Ashburnham Place (now run by a lively Christian Trust) is set among 220 acres of grounds designed by Capability Brown in the 18th century. The wildlife value of the estate has been recognised by it receiving SSSI status; particular note is to be taken of its 170 types of lichens and all three types of British woodpecker breed in the 220 acres of woodland.
The work will involve some scrub clearance (rhododendron, bramble and silver birch saplings) as well as caring for the young tree plantations and management of the ride. At some point of the holiday there will be a guided tour around the estate.
Staying at Target Lodge within the grounds of Ashburnham , the lodge is a wood cabin with shower and toilet facilities, a small common room and a lovely terrace. You will have your own bedroom with wash basin.
During the holiday there will be plenty of opportunities to explore the estate and surrounding area. The holidays are fully catered, so this leaves more time to enjoy the evenings, with deer- spotting, a visit to the cinema, a game of skittles or the more traditional trip to the pub!
Historical Battle and the scenic South Downs provide plenty of choice for the day off.
