This is a brilliant family adventure holiday for those looking to try out winter sports, possibly for the first time. Having been part of the Ottoman Empire for 5 centuries, then a Communist State, today's Bulgarians are proud that their language and culture have survived. From the Black Sea in the east to Sofia in the west, Bulgaria has a range of topographical regions, including several Alpine mountain ranges. Over recent years Bulgaria's popularity as a ski destination has increased dramatically and new resorts have sprung up out of nowhere. Keen to stay away from this mass tourism, we have devised a family-specific itinerary that offers a taster of winter activities in a tranquil resort frequented by Bulgarians. Maliovitsa, at 1720 metres above sea level is famous in Bulgarian alpinism and makes the perfect base for this winter family adventure holiday. After arriving in Sofia, we transfer to our hotel. The following day offers an opportunity to try downhill skiing - the area has a range of pistes suitable for all levels. Next we try snowshoeing and, after some instruction, we make the thrilling 4-hour trek up to Strashnoto Ezero, the 'Lake of Fear'. Our final activity is cross-country skiing. Returning to Sofia, via a thermal spa, we spend the night in a downtown hotel and enjoy exploring this friendly wintry city. This sparkling holiday promises a treat for all the family.
Trip Guide
Is it for you and your family? Suitable for children aged 7+
This is a great centre-based family adventure holiday for a quick beginners burst in the white world of winter sports. During the days we are here, there is a range of activities from downhill skiing, to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The Maliovitsa resort is small, family friendly and mostly has easier pistes for skiing. We will have instruction in all the activities that we do before we start, and all equipment is provided. Instruction is usually first thing in the morning and then we have the day to practice. The afternoon of day 4 we can revisit any of the activities we have done the previous days. Of course there is always time for the children just to enjoy the snow, have snow-ball fights and build snow-men.
