A word from Wilderness Journeys:
The Wilderness Journeys Difference
In choosing Wilderness Journeys you can be sure that you are travelling with a company that takes its commitment to sustainable tourism and wilderness conservation seriously. Whether you are on a walking safari in Kenya, sea kayaking in Greenland or trekking in Patagonia, our trips are designed to protect and benefit the environments that you are travelling through.
Responsibility to the wilderness environments, through which we journey and the communities we work with has always been and will continue to be at the very core of our business. Most recently our commitment was recognised at the Responsible Tourism Awards where we came highly commended in the mountain environment category.
For a business to be truly sustainable it is necessary, in our view, to recognise that environmental and social factors are as equally important as the financial bottom line. This is especially critical in the tourism industry where our product is in many ways the precious wild places we choose to visit. For example, on our ski touring trips in France, we shun the lifts and rely on leg-power to travel through the mountains. In Tanzania, we work with a local partner who employs local Masai guides to lead walking safaris.
Put simply, our mission is to make a meaningful contribution to wilderness conservation through our holidays - both in terms of direct financial support to local conservation projects and also in ensuring that the locations we visit are part of an integrated local framework, where tourism is proven to directly benefit local communities and conservation effort.
Our strategy is that for each trip we provide an overview of the sustainable tourism considerations relevant to that destination, a summary of the nature conservation challenges that region or country faces and a statement of the policies that we are following in order to make a difference. We hope that this will enable you to make an informed choice about your trip and be aware that positive benefits will arise by choosing to travel with Wilderness Journeys, whether you are exploring the tepuis of Venezuela or discovering the wonders of Malawi.
The Wilderness Journeys Difference
Our destinations are selected on the basis that we can make a difference through our visit. We are deeply committed to supporting wilderness conservation initiatives and community‐led tourism. Through benefiting from tourism, local communities will increasingly value their wildlife and forests and have a clear motivation to protect their natural heritage in a world which is rapidly changing.
As with all of our holidays, we work with local partners who are committed to minimising the environmental impact of their activities and supporting local mountain communities. They are hugely passionate about the wilderness areas they visit and while guiding they provide subtle education to their clients about how fragile the environment is and the importance of leave no trace. Groups are in fact, kept to a maximum of 6 people to minimise the impact. Ski touring is inherently low carbon travel - ski lifts are kept to a minimum and we rely on leg-power to travel through the mountains. Furthermore, ski touring takes you to inaccessible places, where your footprint will be only snow deep.
