A wonderful slow travel journey through the Italian countryside and then by boat to Greece. Overnight in Milan is a treat, and so is the wonderful coastal trip on the new high speed train down to Bari... and arriving by boat on the final leg is a special way to arrive in to Greece.

 

Detailed itinerary

Option 1: via Paris, Milan, Bari and Patras

Sample itinerary: Take the 09.17 service from St Pancras to Paris, cross the city to Gare de Lyon and take the 14.41 train, which arrives in Milan Porta Garibaldi at 21.51. Stay overnight in Milan, then in the morning catch the 0750 high speed train to Bari, which arrives at Bari Centrale at 14:20, giving you plenty of time to chill out for the afternoon and then catch the 19.20 ferry to Patras. Superfast's bus connection to Athens departs shortly after your arrival at the port of Patras, and will have you in Athens a few hours later.

Leg 1:

London St Pancras International to Paris Gare du Nord in the heart of Paris. Don't forget check-in time for Eurostar is at least 30 mins before departure.

First train departs 0540 (Mon-Fri), 0618 (Sat), 0819 (Sun).

Last train departs 2001 (Mon-Sat), 2031 (Sun).

Frequency of service: 18 trains Mon-Thur, 20 trains Friday, 22 on Saturday, 17 on Sunday.

Transfer

A relatively quick train trip from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon. From the Eurostar platform, turn left, walk down the stairs and follow the signs for RER ligne D (which will be signposted 'direction' 'Melun', 'Malesherbes' or 'Corbeil Essonnes'). It's just 2 stops from Gare de Nord to Gare de Lyon and takes a little over 10 minutes (plus there's a short 5 minute walk to the connecting TGV departure platforms), but we recommend you leave at least 50 minutes for the entire transfer.

Leg 2:

Paris Gare de Lyon to Milan

There are several departures every day from Paris Gare de Lyon to Milan, leaving early morning (arriving early afternoon) or early afternoon (arriving late evening).

The high speed Frecciarossa train departs Milan Centrale at 07:50 and arrives Bari Centrale at 14:20.

Transfer It's less than a half-hour's walk from the station to the port, but taxis are plentiful. Alternatively, bus number 20 runs from Piazza Moro (outside the train station) to the port (Stazione Maritima).

Leg 4: Bari to Patras (ferry)

Ferries depart daily Monday - Saturday at 2000, and at 1200 on Sundays.

Transfer It's an easy transfer from ferry to bus, or bus to ferry at Patras port. Both are run by Superfast Ferries and if in doubt, you can ask a member of staff.

Leg 5: Patras to Athens (bus)

Services are timed to coincide with the arrival of the ferry, so that you can transfer smoothly and continue your journey onward to Athens.
