Walking on the North York Moors
Follow wooded riverside paths, green lanes and moorland tracks to reach some of Yorkshire's prettiest villages nestling almost unnoticed in secluded corners. From Pickering, take the historic steam train north and walk back over the moors.

The North York Moors National Park is famed for its vast expanses of heather-clad moorland which, in late summer, light up the landscape in a fiery blanket of vivid pinks and purples. Here, sheep are left to graze amid relics of ancient human habitation, while small hill-farms dot the lower slopes and valleys, divided by miles of dry-stone walls and winding lanes. This walk is an ideal introduction to some of England's wildest countryside, with the accommodation providing a high standard of comfort and cuisine. Walking along wooded riverside paths, green lanes and moorland tracks from one pretty village to the next, you experience the gentle beauty of northern England and the wild grandeur of the moors. The archetypal stone villages you pass through are so characteristic of the area, located in secluded corners where life is played out without fuss, much as it has done for centuries.
At Sinnington and Pickering, you will be warmly welcomed to your comfortable accommodation. In Pickering, it is possible to upgrade to a charming town-centre hotel.
Please note that dogs are not permitted on Inntravel holidays.
Accommodation:
Country Inn, Sinnington Located right on the edge of the national park, this is a charming former coaching inn with beamed ceilings, wood-panelled walls and open fireplaces. The restaurant justly enjoys an excellent reputation locally, with imaginative dishes such as twice-baked Yorkshire Blue soufflé.
Small Hotel, Pickering This small, family-run hotel was built as an Edwardian Manse and contains many original features. You will be warmly welcomed by owners Valerie and Colin Gardner, who create excellent meals of locally sourced produce, which are served in the conservatory dining room. A comfortable lounge area makes the perfect place to unwind after a day's walking. Alternatively, you can choose to relax in the gardens and orchard or on the terrace on warm evenings. Set in a quiet location, the hotel is just a few minutes' walk into the centre of Pickering.
Traveller Reviews of This Trip
The railway was a great experience. Congratulations to the researcher – the walking directions could not have been better. The Blacksmith’s Arms at Lastingham (on one of the walks) is the best pub I have ever visited. Mr B Hoffmann, Esher, Surrey, 18/09/2011
We loved the villages and churches – particularly on the day 1 circular route from Sinnington. The village of Lastingham was a real highlight – we had coffee at the Lastingham Grange hotel, in their magnificent gardens. The ancient church there actually made the whole trip to Yorkshire worthwhile – very special! We also very much enjoyed the trip on the steam train.
We have used Inntravel a number of times abroad but this was our first trip here in the UK. We will most certainly be doing another one, and have very much enjoyed visiting an area of England that neither of us knew anything about. The organisation worked very well and we were very happy! Mrs Morton, Hampshire, 03/05/2011
The countryside around Sinnington was absolutely beautiful. We also enjoyed the walk from Levisham to Pickering on our last day. The weather, of course, has been wonderful these past few weeks. We will book with you again – we always enjoy our holidays with you. Thanks very much! Mr Staniland, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, 25/04/2011
