Green Holidays in Switzerland

This pint-sized country at the heart of Europe packs more breathtaking scenery into its small area than most countries several times its size: dominated by the towering peaks of the Alps, Switzerland is paradise for snow sports enthusiasts, walkers and the millions of people who have found themselves spellbound by dramatic vistas of jagged mountains reflected in crystal clear lakes.

With busy, dynamic cities and picturesque half-timbered villages, fairytale castles and vineyard-carpeted hill country, Switzerland's appeal is endless, and its vastly varied landscapes give the opportunity for all sports and activities imaginable.

Add into the mix a wealth of eco-friendly places to stay, this is a country which prides itself on its natural environment - so it's no surprise the Swiss Tourist Board has a dedicated section on Sustainable tourism in Switzerland on its website.

Switzerland is also closer than you might think: just a few hours from St Pancras on the train, so you can travel with a clear conscience - and it's also possible to ski and snowboard without ruining the environment, check out greentraveller founder Richard Hammond's guide to responsible skiing.

Below are some of the best green places to stay and holidays in this stunning country, all of which you can reach by train or ferry - from a ski holiday in beautiful Blitzingen to walking around Lake Lucerne and some of the world's most spectacular rail journeys through the Alps.
