Snowshoeing in the Nevache Valley, France
The Nevache Valley is probably the area with the most snow in the South Alps and the perfect location for a brilliant, challenging snowshoe expedition. Walk across plateaux of virgin snow, along high ridges and scale summits.
Overview of Snowshoeing in the Nevache Valley
As you might expect from the area with the most amount of snow in the South Alps, Nevache is paradise for those looking for a little Winter adventure. In fact, Nevache even translates as 'covered in snow'. Once you've had the chance to explore the area, you'll warm up for the challenges ahead with an introductory walk in the Thures plateau so you can get used to the conditions and take some time to wonder at the Alpine scenery. Then comes a challenging four-day snowshoe trek where you'll walk on fresh snow and reach some truly remote mountainous areas. Reaching such areas will make the excursion quite the challenge but you'll be glad you've taken part when you see just how fantastic the views from these secluded regions can be.
During your free day in Nevache, no one would blame you for simply admiring the traditional chalets and gazing at the beautiful 15th Century church of Saint Marcellin. However, the optional activities that you could get involved in include cross country skiing and even dog sledding, so you might want to save the sit down for the journey home!
Here's a brief overview of the itinerary:
- Day 1: Arrive in Nevache and spend the night in a traditional gite
- Day 2: Head towards the Thures plateau for some fantastic panoramic views of both the Nevache and Stretta valleys
- Day 3: Head out and explore the Chardonnet valley, offering stunning views of the Alps and stay in the refuge de Chardonnet
- Day 4: Walk to the Raisin Valley and onto the beautiful Col du Raisin, before continuing to Drayeres
- Day 5: Explore the Muande Valley and then continue to the col des Muandes
- Day 6: Your last day of snowshoeing spent in the Gardiole Valley before returning to Nevache
- Day 7: A well-deserved free day where you can relax in Nevache's cafes and shops or take part in a number of optional fun activities if you want to continue your adventure
- Day 8: Depart from Nevache
