Downhill skiing in St-Luc, Switzerland

The village of St Luc lies in one of the sunniest corners of Switzerland in the quiet Val d’Anniviers. The surrounding mountains include the iconic peak of the Matterhorn, among many more of over 4,000 metres. Burned deep mahogany by the bright sunlight, the pretty chalets in the villages here are quintessentially Swiss, nowhere more so than Le Grand Chalet Favre, your traditional hotel dating from 1933. It is owned by Anne-Françoise and Claude Buchs, who also run the nearby Hotel Bella Tola - the facilities of which you are invited to use.

From the hotel, there is easy access to varied downhill skiing for all levels on generally uncrowded slopes. The village's high altitude (at 3,025 metres) means that it has an excellent snow record, keeping the slopes open for a long season each year. As the pistes wind through the forests, they offer great views along the valley towards the Zinal glacier, and over to Grimentz. There are further ski areas here, too, which you are free to access with your included lift pass.

During the week, the skiing is exceptionally quiet and you frequently have the slopes to yourselves. At St-Luc there are 25 blue and red runs totalling 75 kilometres, served by 13 draglifts and accessed by means of the regular free ski bus (which picks skiers up from right outside the hotel) and a four-minute trip up the funicular.

Why not have a go at snowshoeing or go for a walk along a number of trails that link the village with Chandolin, or up to the observatory along the ‘path of the planets’?

What our customers say:

Mrs Hood of Dorset
We really enjoyed the walking. The trails were in general well marked and prepared, and the scenery, especially at the skiing levels, was spectacular. The funicular train made it easy to get to the upper slopes. for the high level walking. The post bus was free around the villages, and enabled us to walk to and from other villages. Overall we enjoyed St. Luc, which is a very traditional Swiss village, and very friendly. It is set amidst some of the most spectacular scenery we have seen.
