Details of Sami Traditions and Northern Lights Trip
Alta is a city familiar to sightings of the Aurora Borealis. It was here in 1899 that the first permanent Northern Lights observatory was built on the mountain peak Haldde overlooking Kåfjord. It has since moved to Tromsø, but the town’s appeal to visitors wishing to see the Aurora is as strong as ever. Alta is located in the vast county of Finnmark – an important Arctic region home to the indigenous Sami people. Their reindeer herds are a common sight over the fells of Finnmark, and in particular the high plateau of Finnmarksvidda where this trip is located.

You’ll explore the extraordinary legacy and influence of the Sami people and have the opportunity to visit a vast mountainous region indented by fjords and river tributaries. You’ll spend three days with a Sami family learning about and participating in the rhythms of their everyday life with their reindeer herd. You’ll eat, drink and joik (sing) together and explore the landscape by snow mobile and reindeer sled. You’ll also enjoy the city of Alta before staying overnight at the wondrous Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel. This is a unique winter adventure to treasure and will be tailored to your requirements and preferred departure dates.
