Snowshoe through spectacular Pyrenean peaksThe Pyrenean Mountains are perfect for winter exploration, and we have been sending groups there for years to enjoy our tried and tested daywalks. In the company of our expert expat John Howie we journey from the French spa town of Luchon to some incredible panoramas as we climb to a small peak or ridge. Whether we journey through deep snow or along well marked trails, every day is both challenging and breathtaking by the beauty of these mountains. This year we feature a more challenging departure (15th March 2015) which ventures out on a three day hut based expedition in the heart of the Aigues Tortes National Park, just over the Spanish border.

Greentraveller's Travel Advice: "Accompanied by a mountain leader called Phillippe, we arrive at a sunlit mountain where p

atches of snow still remain. We click into our paddles and tentatively take our first steps. Jonathan encourages us to pick up speed when we launch ourselves downhill, showing us how to dig in our heels so we don’t slip. It’s exhilarating, taking great leaps and wondering if you’re going to be able to stop at the bottom. When the snow peters out, we simply remove the snowshoes and carry on in our walking shoes - you can’t do that when you’re skiing. Then it’s home with glowing cheeks for a fabulous three-course dinner laid on by Myriam."

Anna Sheperd discovers the joys of snow-trekking in the French Pyrenees... travelling there by train, via Toulouse (see our guide to taking the Train from London to Toulouse), she stayed with Jonathan Peat and his French wife Myriam, who live in an undiscovered region called L’Ariege just above Andorra in Spain. They live with their three sons in a rambling 19th Century manor house with a vast garden that leads down to orchards and a river. Anna and her mother went on day treks into the mountains. All a far cry from the crowded lifts and snow-machines of traditional ski resorts...

There were recent celebrations of the 100th year of the Haute Route, a long distance thrilling ski touring route. The route is now the most coveted ski touring itinerary linking two of the most iconic mountain resorts, Chamonix in France and Zermatt in Switzerland. 100 years ago it was originally being devised by the gentlemen climbers of the British Alpine Club and first skied in 1911. Its popularity is probably down to it featuring some of Europe’s highest peaks and glaciers and that it is definitely a challenge.
