Overview of Puglia: Cycle the heel of Italy
This is one of our favourite trips, bringing together everything that makes southern Italy such a fantastic place to go on holiday. This 8-day cycling trip around the heel of Italy's iconic boot combines beautiful Mediterranean coastline, World Heritage Sites, miles of vineyards and olive groves, and beautiful Renaissance architecture. Also, the trip is self-guided so you'll be able to take it at your own pace, pausing as and when you see fit.
Starting in Matera, you'll be able to kick the trip off with a visit to Alberobello and the fantastic Sassi houses, carved directly into ravines and gullies - it is now also recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll also get the chance to visit Gallipoli, otherwise known as the 'Ionian Pearl', and the fascinating castle that perches on its own limestone island. When you factor in other trips to Santa Maria di Leuca, Locorotondo and Otranto, you soon realise that this is a trip not to be missed!
Here's a brief overview of the itinerary:
- Day 1: Start in Matera
- Day 2: Cycle Matera to Alberobello, passing the fantastic 'Sassi' houses of the region
- Day 3: Make your way to Ostuni, through the green Valle d'Itria and the famous wine town of Locorotondo
