John McCarthy talks to the winners of the Whitley Award (for nature conservation) on BBC Radio 4's flagship travel programme, Excess Baggage.

The programme focuses on two projects in Uganda and Thailand that work "in the tricky interface between the conflicting needs of the local human population and the indigenous animals" with "consideration for how sustainable tourism can help".

John McCarthy talks to Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka for her work with local communities and mountain gorillas at Bwindi, Uganda and to Jittin Ritthirat for his work with the conservation of elephants in West Thailand.
