Hi just wanted to know if I can buy my ticket on the day of travel or can I/should I buy it in advance? If I buy in advance can I get it at any main train station? Railways

It’s hard to tell, I never really thought about that. Above all I think traveling by ferry is by far the greenest way to travel. If you ask me it’s also a very nice traveling experience. I have best memories about canal holidays so you can understand now my option.
There is now another ferry company between Portsmouth and Bilbao – Acciona http://www.atferries.com/index.html.
They offer mini-cruises for 4 ghts as well as 3 when the ship ca be used a hotel in Santurtzi.
To link the ferry to train is easy (ish) as the RENFE station in Santurtzi is within 10 minutes of the ferry terminal, this will take you to the beautiful terminus at Bilbao Abando where you can travel further afield.
There is also a narrow guage railway (FEVE looks like tram+) along the north coast.
I just travelled to Marbella, via Madrid, from London. It was a wonderful train journey, and I booked it all following the detailed and invaluable instructions from www.seat61.com. The hoteltrain was excellent, and be sure to book a seat in the restaurant as soon as you board. Otherwise the food in the bar is the best train food I have ever tasted.
I have written about the journey and it will be published in Metro, a London newspaper, January 12. I’ll send a link after this date.

Glad to see you had a good journey through Spain, which is somehow what I’d expect. I’m travelling from Haydock (between Liverpool & Manchester) to Cortes de la Frontera in Andalucia with my husband in July and we’re hoping to do the whole trip by train. As you say www.seat61.com is proving invaluable but can anyone suggest something similar for this country? I’m truly expecting our biggest problem will be getting to and from London. Some sites don’t allow for such forward planning and the train timetables in the UK tend to get changed in May and the various deals are SO confusing! I’d be grateful for anyone’s help

I would like to tell you there is a nice website where you can find a flat or house for rent on your travel. For interested, check: Travel rentals
My suggestion is to go either by ferry from Portsmouth to Bilboa. There are departures every three days, at 21.15 and arrive at 0800 two days later. A return trip for a foot passenger costs from £235.25, including a cabin. If you want to take a car it costs from £378. See P&O Ferries website Portsmouth-Bilbao page for more details.
Alternatively, you could take the train to Madrid. Take the Eurostar from Waterloo to Paris then the overnight ‘trainhotel’ to Madrid. It needn’t be too expensive either – fares are from £59 return from London to Paris then £50 each way for the trainhotel to Madrid including a bed for the night. For more info, see seat61.com – it’s the best place on the net for advice on train travel to the continent.
