Jordan's Royal Society for Conservation of Nature
Jordan's Royal Society for Conservation of Nature (RSCN) manages a series of eco lodges that are environmentally friendly, provide a source of income for the Bedouin staff and help fund conservation. The RSCN's Dana Guesthouse was this week's Clean Break in the Guardian.
Another lodge they manage is Feynan Eco Lodge where I went last November, see: Bedouin and Breakfast

HOW GREEN ARE FERRIES?
Whilst I cannot speak for other ferry companies, I can provide you with the results of a recent assessment of Brittany Ferries’ CO2 emissions by the reputable environmental consultancy, Climate Care (www.climatecare.org). It has calculated our average CO2 emission per passenger per km based on our carryings over the past year to be 24 gm per passenger per km which, according to Climate Care, is about 20% of the equivalent figure for short-haul flights.
Of course, most of our passengers take their car and so a comparison between air and ferry for the total journey will not result in quite such a significant differential because they have to drive to and from the UK port and to and from their final destination. Nonetheless, there are normally between 3 or 4 passenger in a car and most of our passengers live in Southern England and do not drive huge distances in France or Spain. One has to bear in mind that, even when making an air journey, in all likelihood a family will travel to the UK airport by car and hire a car at their destination and, because Brittany Ferries operates longer routes to Brittany, Normandy and Spain, we save miles of unnecessary driving and, therefore, CO2.
We certainly provide a more eco-friendly way of getting to France or Spain than flying. For details of our services visit brittanyferries.com
