Holidays in Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia rises from the midst of the Mediterranean a dazzling emerald, fringed by golden sands and plunging cliffs. Spectacularly beautiful and still largely free from the ravages of mass tourism, Italy's second largest island holds much allure. There is far more to Sardinia than its famous coastline - which, beyond the Costa Smeralda, is surprisingly low key but nonetheless spectacular - although the waters around it are perfect for everything from sea kayaking to snorkelling holidays.

Inland, a rugged, mountainous terrain is perfect for walking and mountain biking. The island is also home to ancient Nuragic sites, pretty towns and villages, including the lovely Alghero and the atmospheric capital, Cagliari. The delicious cuisine of the island includes lobster and other seafood alongside pork and vino nero, making it perfect for gourmands, as well as those seeking an active break or just a holiday in the sun. Check out some of the best (and greenest) holidays and places to stay in Sardinia below.
