Holidays in the Italian Alps, Italy

Crowning Italy's glorious combination of cities, coast and scenery is Europe's great mountain range, the Alps. Whilst France, Switzerland and Austria might get most of the attention for their spectacular scenery and fine ski and snow resorts, Italy has just as much to offer when it comes to winter holidays and mountain scenery. Fringing the lovely Italian lakes and the dramatic Valle d'Aosta before heading towards the dramatic Dolomites, Italy's Alpine region is perfect for winter sports as well as summer.

The Italian Alps are not only an excellent destination when it comes to activity holidays; their geography also makes them culturally significant. South Tyrol is the region where central Europe collides with the Mediterranean and French, Italian, German and Ladin are spoken side by side. Cities in the region are brimming with history, as are the shores and islands of Lake Maggiore and Lake Como, where 17th Century architecture and fine restaurants make the Italian Alps the perfect destination for a romantic getaway.
