Holidays in Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France

Many people simply speed through France's most northerly region on the way elsewhere, but the Nord Pas de Calais has plenty to offer, from the bustling metropolis of Lille to the Côte d'Opale's long, silver beaches and the haunting beauty of the WW1 battlefields in Picardy.

Lille was put on the tourist map when it became Capital of Culture in 2004. It has a vibrant arts scene, lots of indepedent theatres and, of course, some supurb French restaurants. December is an excellent time of year to go since not only does the city have its very own Christmas market, but it also hosts a 'festival of light' where free outdoor performances bring illuminated streets and squares alive. If outdoor persuits are more your thing then the flat landscape provides excellent opportunities for not-too-strenuous cycling holidays, soaking up the historical signifiance of the battlefields and taking breaks in pretty French villages.
