City Breaks in France
France has no shortage of fine cities to lure tourists away from the beauty of its countryside. Of course, the country’s beautiful capital, Paris, is one of the world's foremost destinations, with its wonderful architecture and diverse range of stunning attractions, but the country's other urban centres also have a wealth of landmarks, history and culture to offer the visitor, which makes for endless possibilities of a great city break in France.
The dynamic northern metropolis of Lille is easily accessible by train, as is the elegant gastronomic heaven of Lyon. The country’s north-eastern corner offers you the historic and picturesque capital of the Alsace region, Strasbourg, while the French Alps is home to the picture-perfect lakeside Alpine destination of Annecy and its alluring 12th century castle.
In the sun-drenched South, a wide range of fantastic urban destinations including chic Nice, bustling Marseille, beautifully preserved Avignon and the ancient spa city of Aix-en-Provence all vie for your attention, while the pink city of Toulouse competes with the honey coloured wine capital of Bordeaux as South West France's foremost urban destination. During the festive season, the Christmas Markets of Lille and Avignon are both perfect getaways to enjoy holiday cheer, sample regional specialties and stock up on fabulous gifts and beautiful decorations.
There are of course many more absolutely wonderful towns and cities to visit in France each with their own unique attractions and character and all within easy reach by train or ferry - check out the great city breaks in France we feature below:
