Details of In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great

This expertly guided tour of beautiful Greece and Macedonia takes us back to the ancient world in which Alexander the Great grew up, including the palace where he was born, the idyllic rural setting where he was schooled by Aristotle, learning about his personality and the lives of those around him - from his youth as Prince to his years as King and warrior leader, waging war against (and conquering) the Persian Empire - as well as the history of the times during which he lived.

During Alexander's formative years, his father Phillip II expanded the Kingdom of Macedonia at a rapid pace - and we will explore this expanded realm along the same routes that Alexander took when regent to his father the King in order to familiarise himself with the lands that he would one day rule. This varied and beautiful land includes the lakes and forests of Western Macedonia, the cities of Herakleia Lynkestis and Philippi, founded by Phillip II, as well as the richly fertile heartland of the kingdom: Pella, Vergina and Edessa. On the tour we'll visit the sites of many of the famous battles and seiges of the wars of expansion, including the cities of Methone, Olynthos and Stageira and the battlefield of Chaironeia.

After exploring the very epicentre of Alexander's ancient kingdom - including the chance to stand in the grand tomb of his father - we head south into the heartland of Ancient Greece. Here we will visit some of the ancient world's most famous and important sites, which were key to the development of Macedonia - Delphi, Corinth, Olympia and Athens. The tour ends in the Macedonia's most important sanctuary, Dion, where Alexander and his men prepared for the battles and marches to come as they journeyed east with great feasting.

This holiday is an epic cultural tour, a road trip that takes us through lush forests, dramatic mountain ranges, along the shores of the Aegean Sea and beautiful lake country. We will see and visit many of the greatest cities, temples, tombs and sites of the Classical world, and enjoy fantastic food and gracious hospitality from the locals of this welcoming region.
