Ferry from Santander to Portsmouth

Route: Ferry from Santander (Northern Spain) to Portsmouth (Southern England)
Journey time: 24 hours
Journey highlights:

If you want to travel from northern Spain to the UK, but you don't want to fly or endure a long drive through France, this is the trip for you. Brittany Ferries' luxurious ferry is like going on a mini-cruise, and you may see whales and dolphin on the crossing - the Bay of Biscay is one of the best places in Europe to spot these magnificent marine animals.

Portsmouth’s life has inextricably been tied up with its port since Richard the Lionheart summoned a fleet from the town in the middle ages: today it is one of the UK’s great maritime centres. Its old town is an atmospheric place that harkens back to the small town it once was, and you can discover the city’s heritage in the historic dockyard. The port is still very much alive, and throbbing with life: new shops and restaurants stand in the shadow of the landmark 557 foot-high Spinnaker tower.

Inland, you’ll find a busy city centre and streets of handsome Victorian houses, whilst to the south lies the charming seaside resort of Southsea. With its vast green Common and lovely beaches, Southsea also boasts independent shops and cafés, an aquarium, a Royal Marines Museum and a castle dating back to the times of Henry VIII. To find out more about the numerous things to do and see in the Portsmouth area, check out the city’s official tourism website.

Welcome to Portsmouth

Between May and September there is a shuttle bus between the continental ferry port and Portsmouth & Southsea railway station. (There is also a shuttle bus from the station called Portsmouth The Hard Interchange, where some trains stop), or you can take a taxi for around £5. Portsmouth & Southsea is well connected to the UK rail network, including regular services to London Waterloo.  For a comprehensive network of services across the city, you will need to make use of Portsmouth’s buses. Services are run by First Hampshire & Dorset, and Stagecoach. The city council provides a list of bus services and a map of the city with bus routes, whilst First offers a breakdown of ticket prices (fares depend on the distance travelled, a day pass costs £4) and diagrammatic bus maps of Portsmouth and Hampshire.

Portsmouth is a vibrant city with a rich maritime history that can be explored in its Historic Dockyard. Neighbouring Southsea is a pretty, genteel seaside town with much to offer the visitor: check out the official Southsea tourist website.
