Detailed itinerary

Option 1: via Portsmouth and Santander

Sample itinerary: Leave London Victoria on the 0800 train, arriving Portsmouth & Southsea station at 0932. The ferry leaves at 1100 and arrives in Santander at 1200 the next day. Grab a bit of lunch and take the 1350 bus on to Oviedo, where you'll arrive at 1605.
Price: Trains to Plymouth and Portsmouth are bookable at www.thetrainline.com. Return ferries to Santander cost from around £88 return. Trains from Santander to Oviedo cost around €26,30 return (www.feve.es or www.raileurope.co.uk).
Leg 1: London Waterloo to Portsmouth & Southsea

Trains depart at 0730, arriving 0902, and 0800, arriving 0932, then regularly for the rest of the day. There are also some trains from London Victoria.

Transfer Between May and September there is a shuttle bus between the station and the harbour. (There is also a shuttle bus from the station called Portsmouth The Hard Interchange, where some trains stop). Otherwise a taxi costs around £5.

Leg 2: Portsmouth to Santander by ferry (overnight)

Ferries leave on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 1100, arriving next day at 1200. No service December - February, reduced service March and November.

Leg 3: Santander to Oviedo (train or bus)

First bus departs Santander Monday - Saturday at 0715 (0830 week-round), with the last bus at 2000 (2115 Friday and Sunday). There is also a night-time service at 0330. There are trains daily at 0910 and 1610.
Frequency of service: 2 trains and around 10 buses a day.

Option 2: via Plymouth and Santander

Sample itinerary: Leave London Paddington at 0906, arriving in Plymouth at 1222. Catch the ferry at 1630, and be in Santander the next day at 1300, where you can connect to the 1350 bus to Oviedo, arriving at 1605.

Regular trains from Paddington to Plymouth. On a Sunday there is a train at 0742 arriving at 1209, 0857 arrives 1232, and 0957 arrives 1331.
