1 week – 5 trails, follow the Smuggler’s routes criss crossing the border between the Spanish Extremadura and the Portuguese Alto Alentejo, used for centuries, rediscovered, explore the “Wild West” of the Extremadura, from the doorstep, accompanied by our donkey to carry the “goods”.

Saturday: Arrival and dinner in Casa Salto del Caballo Sunday: breakfast, round course walk over the border into Portugal to pick up our donkey, loaded with picnic for the walk crossing over the Sever, the border river, and back into Spain. Always on sight the “eagles nest” Marvão, fortified village up high 1000 m the highest village in Portugal. Picnic on tour, back to Casa Salto, time to rest, dinner.12km

Monday: breakfast, walk criss-crossing the border several times until we reach “casas de la duda” a smuggler’s village where doubts are still today which house is Portuguese and which is Spanish! Picnic, back home. 12 km. Time to rest and dinner in Casa Salto del Caballo

Tuesday: breakfast, round course walk with our donkey carrying the picnic via the Portuguese border village of Pitarranha, cross the border into San Pedro where we have a picnic perhaps time for a drink in the former monastery “San Pedro de los Majarretes”, back home time to rest and dinner. 10 km

Wednesday: breakfast, time to rest, discover the area on your own or go for a trip out. Back in Casa Salto del Caballo for dinner.

Thursday: breakfast, walk from the house into Portugal to Marvão and vistit of the village and fortified castle with amazing 360 degree views of the Serra de Estrela and the Extremadura, snack lunch in the village. 15 km

Friday: breakfast, round course walk, accompanied by our donkey, to a hidden away abandoned smuggler’s village “Huerta Luna” (Moon Garden) and visit an ancient, ruined grain-mill “Molino de la Negra”, on the way back we can see one of 52 prehistoric dolmens (Tapada del Anta) 8 km Barbecue late lunch/dinner last evening.

Saturday: breakfast and departure

Restrictions: minimum number of participants is 3. The walks require a certain constitution and fitness for walking several hours, partly cross country. The itinerary can be changed due to weather conditions or other unexpected incidents at any time. In extreme weather conditions the donkeys can’t be taken out for their own safety (slippery hooves on wet rocky ground) The itinerary can be in a different order if necessary. The decisions are only up to the organisers.

The price per person in a double room is €780 or  £650. Single rooms in the same 2 bedroom apartment available for the same price for a third person or child. There are only 2 apartments with 2 double bedrooms available. Children under 12 get  20% discount, not recommended for Children under 7 years old due to the length of the walks. Minimum number of 3 participants.
