Jump on a city tram and ride along the banks of the Danube, enjoying views of the Castle District’s striking buildings and landmarks, such as the Matthias Church, Fishermen’s Bastion and the Royal Palace. You'll pass the stunning House of Parliament, one of oldest government buildings on the continent. Take a look up close at the lions guarding the dramatic Chain Bridge, crossing the River Danube and connecting Buda and Pest. Find out about the history and stories of some of the fine architecture of Andrassy Avenue. Lined with wonderful cafes, fine restaurants, theatres and luxury boutiques, it is a the perfect place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the Hungarian capital. Visit Budapest’s original department store, with its intricate ceiling frescos painted by one of the city's most famous artists, then wander through the narrow streets to reach a traditional market. Well off the beaten track, this is a slice of Hungarian life tourists rarely see and is a fantastic place to sample some traditional food.

Next, wander around the district that once was home of Franz Liszt, Hungary’s most famous composer, before heading out of the city centre on a Metro ride. This is continental Europe’s oldest underground railway, and the second oldest system of its kind in the world: its iconic Line 1 was inaugurated in 1896 by Franz Joseph, the King of Hungary. Alight at City Park and explore this vast and beautiful open space. Take in the many beautiful buildings that surround the park and discover the statues adorning Heroes’ Square (and their history) at the grand main entrance. Enjoy the unique atmosphere of this part of the city, wander past the lovely villa houses that surround the park, before you jump back on the metro to end this day tour of Budapest at the spectacular Opera House.
