Overview of Cognac Cycling Holiday

History & Architecture
We start our explorations from Roman Saintes with a ride north east to the Abbey of Fontdouce. Founded in 1111, it has produced an unlikely patchwork of different religious and civil architecture over the centuries. We return via the village of St. Cesaire which allows you to visit the prehistoric site of Paleosite. Next we cycle north along the Charente river to visit the chateau of La Roche Courbon before arriving in the thermal spa town of Saujon.

Marshlands & Coast
Our time in Saujon gives several options. We can recommend cycling towards the marshlands where one of Les Plus Belles Villages (members of the 'most beautiful villages in France') can be found, or alternatively to Mornac which is an oyster producing community on the Suedre estuary. Alternatively, you may like to cycle the short distance to the coastal resort of Royan where you can relax on beautiful sandy beaches.

Eau de Vie & Pineau
We ride as ever along our favoured minor backroads to the pretty medieval town of Pons, complete with castle keep ('Donjon') and a Pilgrims Hospital. The town was an important stop for pilgrims on the route to Santiago de Compostella. Our journey continues through the vineyards to arrive in Cognac, home of the drink of the same name and a chance to sample this famous product.

Day 2 - Ride to Fontdouse

Day 5 - Cycle to Pons
Leave Saujon and explore some of France's most picturesque villages including Corme Ecluse, St Andre de Lidon and the quaint village of Gemozac on your way to Pons.

Day 6 - Cycle to Cognac
Travel South from Pons and follow the Charente river to Cognac, a town steeped in history and tradition.

Day 7 - In Cognac
Lying on the banks of the beautiful river Charente, Cognac is well worth an explore before riding east towards the riverside town of Jarnac and a landscape of vineyards.

Is this trip for you?
This tour is suited to those new to the concept of cycling holidays, but some knowledge of extended cycling is necessary. The terrain is either flat or with gentle inclines. Entrance fees to sites are not included, meaning you can decide what to visit, riding independently or with the group.

The area has a generally rather mild climate. Days during the Summer months are generally warm and sunny, and are warmer than those in southern Britain, although rain can occur throughout the year. Wine harvesting takes place in late August/early September.

The trip is rated 'Easy'

Easy: Generally cycling on the flat and occasionally on hilly terrain with very limited uphill sections. These trips should appeal to anybody with reasonable fitness, who perhaps enjoys a cycle ride at home every now and then.
