Cornish Beachsweep, Cornwall, England
Visit popular and lesser known beaches around the Lizard and Falmouth Bay area while collecting and surveying the litter that has been washed ashore or left behind by visitors and find out how it affects the wildlife along these fragile coasts.
£290
These holidays will take you to some of the most spectacular beaches around the Lizard and Falmouth Bay as well as perhaps the north Cornish coast and Helford estuary - some remote, others well used. Wherever you end up there will be dramatic cliffscapes with a mix of remote and easily accessible beaches.
Comprising a mix of litter collection/surveying and educational activities, all the marine litter collected will be surveyed before bagging and the data fed into the Marine Conservation Society's annual waste survey, in order to aid in action to identify litter problems and tackle them at source.
During the week there will also be a visit to the Bluereef aqurarium where you will receive a guided talk to raise awareness of the dangers and pressures on our local coast and seas and how they can be prevented. Whilst being guided around the aquarium you can observe local marine species from the Cornish coast to hundreds of tropical species. To gain further insight into the impact that marine pollution has on wildlife you will also visit the National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek who rescue and rehabilitate seal pups washed up along the coast. Your third workshop will take you on a rocky ramble exploring the amazing rockpool wildlife along the Cornish shoreline and helping you to identify the marine species you encounter.
Staying at self-catering Tregedna - a traditionally small Cornish mixed working farm in a listed barn especially converted with large groups in mind with a mix of different sized bedrooms from two to six beds or bunks, plus modern showers, and an efficient drying room. Our fruit and veg, meat and dairy products will be sourced from local organic producers where possible and all our tea and coffee is fairly traded.
There's plenty to do on your day off. Tregedna is just a few minutes stroll from the SW coastal footpath and the wide sandy beach at Maenporth, and although set amidst rural calm, theres an easy 40 minute walk along the coastal path into Falmouth and the National Maritime Museum. You'll be guided by experienced group leaders who know the local area well and have a good knowledge of the practical work.
