Overview of Walking to the Matterhorn

Walk self-guided through unspoiled scenery, along the best routes at your own pace, with your luggage transported ahead. The little-discovered Val d'Anniviers, a high valley with a strong individuality in the French-speaking Valais in the south, is one of Switzerland's loveliest corners, its picture-book villages immersed in awe-inspiring high-mountain scenery.

Walking here is tremendous and thoroughly rewarding. As you wind your way along the mountain paths, on a clear day you will glimpse the mighty Matterhorn beyond the head of the valley. Enjoy high standards of hospitality, too, with delicious cuisine (featuring lake and river fish, game in season, and mountain cheeses) and tasty wines from the Rhône Valley below. The Val d'Anniviers enjoys one of the sunniest climates in Switzerland, with wonderful summer flowers and many fine days in September. The itinerary is completely flexible for those who want to take things a little easier.

Hotel Crystal (3*), Grimentz This village is made up of dark wooden houses adorned with colourful windowboxes. This chalet style hotel is located a five-minute walk from the centre and offers a small sauna and fitness room. There is plenty of pinewood throughout and all bedrooms have a small balcony.

Hotel le Besso (2*), Zinal Situated on the main street of this quiet village, this traditional hotel dates back to 1893. With only ten bedrooms there is a real feeling of intimacy and you will be well looked after by Julien and Sabrina. The bedrooms are simply furnished but all enjoy wonderful views. There is also an on-site brewery should you wish to sample the local beer.

Hotel le Grand Chalet Favre (3*), St-Luc This chalet-style hotel is situated in the centre of the village with uninterrupted views up and down the valley from the terrace and the bedrooms. There are 15 individually decorated bedrooms, all with their own balcony or terrace from which to enjoy the views. There is a cosy lounge with open fire and a welcoming bar which attracts locals and visitors alike. Breakfast and dinner are served in the hotel’s restaurant, which also enjoys the same far-reaching views.

Romantik Hotel Bella Tola (4*), St-Luc (Upgrade option) This favourite hotel offers spacious bedrooms, inspiring views of the mountains, excellent cuisine and plenty of space in which to relax, including a superb spa and a panoramic indoor splash pool. Claude and Anne-Françoise Buchs are charming and attentive hosts who have worked hard to maintain and enhance the romantic, fin-de-siècle feel of the hotel.

Traveller Reviews of This Trip

This was a particularly nice package. Good choice of hotels, walking options to cater for how we felt on the day (up to a challenge or wanting a more gentle day's walk), included picnics were great and the free 'liberté pass' travel during the stay was a fantastic addition. We especially liked being able to see views later in the holiday of where we had been and to track where we had walked. Ms C Stokes, Surrey, 15/07/2013

We travelled to and from Switzerland by train, spending two days in Bern at the start of the holiday, and a day in Strasbourg on the way home. We had a week's walking in the Valais region of Switzerland. High level walks to around 3000m with fabulous views of snow-capped mountains, and lower level walks at around 2000m through woodland and open country. We spent 1-2 days in each location, walking from hotel to hotel, as we explored this lovely valley.  Staff at Inntravel are friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. They have detailed knowledge of each holiday location and visit all the hotels used. Detailed walking notes and maps are provided, and interesting information about the locality, including the hotels. Inntravel were also very helpful regarding travel routes and recommending options for having a stop-off before and after the walking holiday. Mrs Jan Passey, Gloucestershire, 03/08/2014
