Travelling from London to Copenhagen
George Middleton considers the various routes to the Danish capital...
Planning a trip from London to Copenhagen has been a lot of fun, as well as ultimately rewarding.
First thoughts (option 1) were to getting to Copenhagen by train as quickly as possible, although still allowing time for a few hours to eat in Brussels to take one of the benefits of travelling overland. This trip involves three trains (London afternoon to Brussels, Brussels evening to Koln, Koln overnight to Copenhagen), around 18 hours travel time. Quoted prices for the trip included the premium of Brussels and Koln being Christmas market destinations. So we looked again. Other train routes, buses then boats.
Option 2: London afternoon to Harwich, Harwich overnight ferry to Esbjerg (Denmark), Esbjerg morning to Copenhagen, around 22 hours travel time.
Option 3: We have though settled on a longer journey offering more on the way. London afternoon to Harwich, Harwich overnight to Amsterdam for the day, Amsterdam overnight to Copenhagen. 43 hours travel time but more than half the price of option 1 and with the benefit of the stop option 2 doesn’t have. It’s about enjoying the journey as well as the destination. Indeed enjoying the planning of the journey, as well as the doing of it. There’s something about maps and imaginations.
