Option 1: via Paris (sleeper)

Sample itinerary: The 1820 sleeper service from Rome gets you to Paris at 0916, giving you enough time for a spot of French breakfast before catching the 1113 Eurostar back to St Pancras.

Leg 1: Rome to Paris Gare de Bercy (sleeper)

Trains depart Rome daily at 1820, arriving in Paris the next morning at 0916.

It's a ten minute walk from Gare de Bercy to Gare de LyonIt's a ten minute walk from Gare de Bercy to Gare de LyonGare de Bercy to Gare du Nord. Walk 600m to Gare de Lyon (or a go to the nearby Bercy metro station and take the metro line 14 one stop to Gare de Lyon signposted 'direction Saint-Lazare') then at Gare de Lyon take the RER ligne D to Gare du Nord (which will be signposted 'direction Creil' or 'direction Orry la Ville Coye'). It's just 2 stops from Gare de Lyon to Gare du Nord and takes a little over 10 minutes, but we recommended you allow at least 50 minutes for the entire transfer and don't forget the 30-minute check-in for Eurostar.

From St Pancras, there are mainline rail connections to Derby, Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield, as well as First Capital Connect trains on the cross-London Thameslink route which continues north as far as Bedford or south to Gatwick Airport and Brighton.

Across the street is Kings Cross station, which has rail connections to the north of England and Scotland, and it's a 15-minute walk (in the opposite direction, heading west) to Euston Station for connections to the West Midlands, the West Coast (including Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester) and Glasgow (including the Scotrail sleeper service).

Option 2: via Milan and Paris (sleeper)

Sample itinerary: Numerous trains will take you from Rome to Milan, where you can transfer to the 2335 sleeper service to Paris, which arrives at 0819 - giving you time for a coffee and a pastry before the 1013 Eurostar service form Gare du Nord to London.

First train departs Rome at 0615, with the last train leaving at 2100. There is also a sleeper service departing Rome at 2304 and arriving in Milan the next morning at 0700.

Sample itinerary: The 1215 service from Rome will get you to Milan at 1545, where you can make the easy transfer to the 1610 service to Paris. After spending a night in the City of Romance, take any Eurostar train from Gare du Nord to London St Pancras - the weekday 0643 service might even get you back in time for work!
