Option 1: via Lille

Sample itinerary: Depart Avignon on the 0918, arrive Lille 1329 and catch the 1505 Eurostar, which arrives London at 1526.

Welcome to London. St Pancras International now has lots of lovely shops, restaurants and gastro pubs... and free wifi throughout the station. If you're planning to stay in the capital, there are over 60 hotels within a one mile radius of St Pancras (by the way, the new spectacular St Pancras Midland Grand Hotel - a 5-star Marriott hotel - has now opened!).

From St Pancras, there are mainline rail connections to Derby, Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield, as well as First Capital Connect trains on the cross-London Thameslink route which continues north as far as Bedford or south to Gatwick Airport and Brighton.

Across the street is Kings Cross station, which has rail connections to the north of England and Scotland, and it's a 15-minute walk (in the opposite direction, heading west) to Euston Station for connections to the West Midlands, the West Coast (including Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester) and Glasgow (including the Scotrail sleeper service).

Option 2: via Paris

Sample itinerary: Take the 0755 from Avignon and you'll be in Paris at 1127, giving you enough time to transfer to Gare du Nord for the 1304 Eurostar to London, arriving at 1431. Or you could have lunch in the French capital before taking the 1513 service and still be back in London before the evening.

First train departs Avignon TGV at 0649 weekdays and 0805 weekends. The last train departs Avignon at 2058 (Mon-Thu, Sat) or 2059 (Fri, Sun), with additional services at 2135 on Fridays and 2205 on Sundays.

Transfer

A relatively quick train trip from Gare de Lyon to Gare du Nord. Follow the signs for RER ligne D (which will be signposted 'direction Creil' or 'direction Orry La Ville Coye'). It's just 2 stops from Gare de Lyon to Gare de Nord and takes a little over 10 minutes, but we recommend you leave at least 50 minutes for the entire transfer, and don't forget the 30-minute check-in for Eurostar.
