Detailed itinerary

Option 1: via Santander and Portsmouth

Sample itinerary: The 1145 bus from Oviedo arrives in Santander at 1500, where you can make the short trip to the port. Leave Santander on the 1600 ferry, arriving next day at 1700. There is a train from Portsmouth & Southsea station at 1820, arriving in London Victoria at 1959.
Price: Trains from Santander to Oviedo cost around €26,30 return (www.feve.es or www.raileurope.co.uk). Return ferries to Santander cost from around £88 return. Trains from Plymouth and Portsmouth are bookable at www.thetrainline.com.
Leg 1: Oviedo to Santander (train or bus)

First bus departs Oviedo at 0745, last bus departs at 0100. Two trains daily at 0905 and 1535.
Frequency of service: 2 trains and around 10 buses a day.

Journey time: From 2 hours 45 minutes.
Transfer Santander's station lies just one block down Avenida Castilla from the ferry port - but if you have too much to carry it's just a minute by taxi.

Leg 2: Santander to Portsmouth by ferry (overnight)

Ferries leave at 1515 or 1600 on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, arriving next day at 1700. No service December - February, reduced service March and November.

Transfer Between May and September there is a shuttle bus between the harbour and the station. (There is also a shuttle bus to the station called Portsmouth The Hard Interchange, where some trains stop). Otherwise a taxi costs around £5.

Leg 3: Portsmouth & Southsea to London Waterloo

Trains depart at 1750, arriving 1929, and 1820 arriving 1959, then regularly through the evening. The last direct train is 2224, arriving 0030. There are also some trains to London Victoria.
