Why we've chosen Tory Bush Cottage:

Review by Catherine Mack

"If you don't know the Mourne Mountains already, get yourself there. Tory Bush is in an amazing location, although decor a little bit 'out of a catalogue' rather than homely. No matter, as you will be drawn out into the hills, and want nothing more than a bath, large roaring fire and bed at end of day."

Tory Bush Cottages are located beside Tollymore Forest Park, overlooking the Mourne Mountains in County Down, Northern Ireland, just 4.5 mile outside the seaside resort of Newcastle

Being just 600 meters from the Ulster Way they are ideally situated for hill walks.

The self catering cottages are built in the ‘Clachan’ style, of traditional appearance with white-washed walls and slate roofs. Dry stone walls, original gates and pillars give the appearance of a ‘turn-of-the-century’ Ulster farm yard.

They were, however, built using the latest materials and techniques incorporating high degrees of insulation and an efficient central heating system to give summer warmth all year round.

There is a choice of a 1, 2,3, or even a 4 bedroom cottage, In each cottage there is a main and an en-suite Bathroom. There is a fully fitted kitchen, with a gas hob & electric fan oven. Dual microwave & grill. Dishwasher & washing machine. Fridge freezer.

Tory Bush Eco-Loft is the latest addition to the Tory Bush Cottages in the scenically remarkable Mourne Mountains region of Co.Down in Northern Ireland. The Cottage Complex is manged on strong environmental principles, we are striving to get European Eco-Flower Accreditation, the Eco-loft has taken this aspiration a stage further.

The Loft is insulated with sheeps wool, it is heated by a wood pellet boiler, supplemented by a log burning stove. The water is harvested rain-water, heated by a solar panel. The internal walls are timber frame lined with a wall board made from compressed news-paper and Gypsum reclaimed from coal-fired power station chimneys. We operate a robust recycling segregation system. There are bicycles available to hire on site.

To truly minimise the environmental impact, guests are encouraged to arrive by public transport: the bus station is Newcastle. From there, it’s just an 8 km taxi journey to the cottages. Newcastle is easily reachable by bus from Belfast and from the UK, Belfast is just a ferry ride away. Onsite the owners have taken a number of green measures to reduce the environmental impact of their tourism business and contribute positively to their surroundings.

Top green features at Tory Bush:

  • Building purposely positioned to capture the optimum amount of heat from the sun.

  • Wood pellet heating system.

  • Solar heated water.

  • Built using compressed newspaper instead of plasterboard.
