Greentraveller's Travel Advice: Africa too is a green travel destination, as the continent's wonders are actually just a train journey away from the UK. Watch the sun set over the French countryside whilst indulging your culinary senses with a three-course meal and a bottle of Rioja en route to Madrid. The following afternoon onwards to Algeciras as you witness the Spanish countryside morph into a Moorish landscape, then hop onto the ferry across the Straits of Gibraltar to the vast continent of Africa.

Overview of Trekking Holiday around Jebel Toukbal

The superb trekking circuit around Jebel Toubkal is an acknowledged classic. It is usual to allow 7 days for this itinerary, including the ascent of the mountain. To complete the same route in just 5 day, we have had to up the pace a little, as we trek across several 3500 metre passes and climb to the highest point in North Africa at 4167 metres. As well as presenting a great challenge to regular mountain walkers, this trip also offers an opportunity to experience the delights of Morocco and the High Atlas – a world far removed from our own.

From the colourful souks of Marrakech, with their vendors of spices, carpets and leather goods, to the pretty stone-built villages of the Berber people, this is Morocco at its most authentic. For those with limited available holiday, or those in need of a quick adventure fix, this really is one of the world’s great treks! To complete the circuit of Toubkal in one week this trek necessarily involves fairly long days with a good deal of ascent and descent.

For most of the trek we follow well-established trails between valleys and villages which are suitable for mules and very straightforward for trekkers. On the ascent of Toubkal and whilst trekking up to the passes on our route, we will encounter zig-zag trails on scree. The ascent of Toubkal presents no technical difficulty and should be within the capabilities of fit and active hikers.
