Overview of Mercantour Walking Holiday

The Mercantour National Park is located at the heart of the 'Alpes Maritimes'  region– little known and,  depite its proximity to the Mediterranean coast, is true Alpine country.   We will lead you up the Var Valley, from the fragrant foohills of Provence to alpine panoramas of rocky outcrops, glacial cirques and deep blue and green lakes, alpine pastures, dense forests, immense gorges and crystal clear rapid glacial rivers.

We have an idyllic climate for walking here, as the alpine and Mediterranean influences converge  to produce a mild, sunny climate. At the higher altitudes, chamois, marmots, eagles and wolves still live undisturbed inside the boundaries of the Mercantour National Park. Our hikes offer a choice of several routes to your daily lodging, according to levels of walking experience and ability. And our secret to making these hidden mountain paths accessible to a family?… a donkey! These affectionate animals have been part of our family for as long as we can remember. Each one of them has their own individual personality and they love the company of humans, especially children.

Verdict: "Amazing experience with carefully thought out itinerary, prepared by people who really care about showing you the best of the mountains. But this is not just a walk in the park. The walks are challenging, but we cityfolk made it, and were over the moon to have achieved it. Itinerance also run a wild camping holiday for families holiday, so we are definitely going back to the Kieffers for that one."

Summary: "This holiday confounded all expectations. It was much tougher than we had expected, and yet we all rose to the occasion in our own ways, and pushed ourselves beyond limits we had never really set ourselves as a family before. The boys threw themselves up the mountains with gutso I never knew they had and chatted with the families, whose arms we fell into every night, with an infectious enthusiasm about the stunning landscape we had just traversed...".
